Assessment Format

Reading & Listening: (60 – 80 minutes)Writing (45 Minutes)Speaking (15 minutes)
The Reading and Listening module is adaptive, so there are no fixed number of questions. Each question the candidate answers helps the computer to understand their level better. The test closes when the candidate has answered enough questions for the AI to identify their level accurately. In the Writing module the candidates must input answers and they are marked automatically by the computer. The Speaking module is taken using a computer with a microphone and headphones. Questions are presented to the candidate through the computer screen and headphones, and their responses are recorded and assessed by examiners.

About the Assessment

Results

Results are presented in a clear, easy-to-understand manner. Each participants will receive a certificate report which will show you:

• the participant’s Cambridge English Scale score for each skill tested

• the participant’s Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) Level for each skill tested

• an average Cambridge English Scale score and associated CEFR level

• an explanation of what each score means in terms of English language ability – you can see where participants have performed well, and where they can improve

A group report will be shared with the stakeholders with participants’ test scores as well as their CEFR level. A ‘can-do’ description of skills will be provided for each proficiency level.

How the Assessment Works

This assessment has been trialled by speakers of over 40 languages from 50 countries to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results.

It combines the latest technology in AI with the reliability and quality you expect from Cambridge Assessment English.

The Writing module uses innovative automarker technology. The automarker is provided with thousands of scripts for each level, which have been marked to CEFR by Cambridge professionals and further annotated for various errors.

The automarker is programmed to extract features such as sentence structure, errors and word combinations from these scripts. Since the automarker knows the CEFR levels, it can associate the patterns to new scripts using an algorithm.

The algorithm methodically searches every script for up to 7,000 features and patterns which include vocabulary, grammar, spellings, capitalisation, punctuation and idea development. The automarker then maps the script feature pattern submitted by the candidate to the CEFR level using the algorithm.
