The Digital Handshake: Networking through Social Media

Contributed by Cherry Bahety, Digital Intern

As a social media manager intern, I’ve been immersed in the dynamic world of digital networking. Gone are the days when networking was confined to business cards and conference rooms. Today, a well-crafted LinkedIn message or an engaging Twitter conversation can open doors to endless opportunities. Here are a few strategies that have worked well for me:

  1. Define Your Social Media Goals: Clarify what you want to achieve with your social media presence, whether it’s building a personal brand, expanding your professional network, or finding new career opportunities.
  2. Identify Your Target Audience: Understand who your target audience is and what their interests are. Tailor your content to resonate with the people you want to connect with.
  3. Choose the Right Platform: Select the social media platforms that best suit your goals and audience. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, focus on where your target audience is most active.
  4. Create Engaging Content: Develop content that captures attention and encourages interaction. Use a mix of posts, stories, videos, and articles to keep your audience engaged and interested.
  5. Handle Negative Feedback Gracefully: Learn how to analyze and respond to hate or negative comments constructively. Maintaining professionalism and empathy is key to managing your online reputation.
  6. Network with Like-Minded Professionals: Follow and connect with professionals in your industry. Engage with their content and participate in relevant conversations to build a robust and supportive network.

Take these strategies, apply them, and watch your professional network flourish in the digital realm.
